Meghalaya Cabinet Approves ‘Art and Heritage Award’ and Amends State Anthem
Shillong: Meghalaya is set to introduce the ‘Art and Heritage Award,’ a significant initiative to honour outstanding contributions in the fields of performing arts, folk music, dance, drama, theatre, and craftsmanship.
The decision, aimed at celebrating the state’s rich cultural heritage, was finalized during a recent Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.
To ensure a fair and transparent selection process, a committee led by the Chief Secretary will be constituted. Members from the Arts and Culture Department will also be part of the committee, which will evaluate and identify deserving artists and contributors to Meghalaya’s artistic legacy. The award seeks to recognize individuals who have played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting the unique traditions of the state.
In another landmark decision, the Meghalaya Cabinet approved an amendment to the state anthem. The revised anthem will now feature additional lines in the Pnar language, following suggestions from the Jaintia Hills district. The move aims to reflect the inclusivity of Meghalaya’s diverse linguistic and cultural heritage.
The Chief Minister’s Office noted that these decisions highlight the government’s commitment to fostering pride in the state’s cultural identity while encouraging the continued growth of its artistic traditions.
