Meghalaya Set to Host AFC Asian Cup Qualifier and International Friendly

Shillong: The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Polo, Shillong, is gearing up to host the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifier and an international friendly in March, following an inspection by AFC Match Commissioner Mindu Dorjee on January 20.

Dorjee, accompanied by All India Football Federation (AIFF) Club Licensing and Competitions Senior Manager Abhishek Yadav, Meghalaya Football Association (MFA) President Hamletson Dohling, and other officials, assessed the stadium’s readiness. The inspection included a review of the natural turf pitch, floodlights, and other facilities during the day and under evening floodlights.

The commissioner expressed satisfaction with the stadium’s condition, highlighting only minor improvements needed. However, the proposed practice ground at the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) campus requires substantial upgrades. Yadav, along with MFA officials and partners, assured Dorjee that the ground would be ready within the two-month preparation window.

MFA President Hamletson Dohling expressed gratitude to the state government for supporting the association’s bid to host these prestigious matches. He emphasized that Meghalaya’s passion for football has been instrumental in gaining the AIFF’s support.

The AFC Asian Cup qualifier, scheduled for March 25, will see India face Bangladesh, while a friendly between India and Maldives will be held a few days earlier. These matches are set to provide football fans in Meghalaya with a rare opportunity to witness international action in their home state.
