Assam: Barpeta District Jail Transforms into a Thriving Agricultural Hub

Guwahati: At first glance, the District Jail in Barpeta may appear like any other correctional facility, but a deeper look reveals a remarkable transformation.

Spanning 127 bighas of land, the jail now boasts vast fields of mustard, fruit-laden trees, a mini bee farm, and rare crops like apple berries, creating an environment unlike any other jail in the country.

Originally established as a makeshift facility in Barpeta Town, the jail was relocated to its current site in 1970, two kilometers from the town. Initially used for paddy cultivation, the grounds have undergone a remarkable evolution under the leadership of District Jail Superintendent Pranjal Kumar Sharma and Jailor Nilutpal Kakati.

In just a year since introducing mixed-cropping techniques, the jail has generated over ₹1 lakh in revenue through the sale of agricultural produce.

What sets this initiative apart is the active involvement of inmates in the farming activities. The agricultural programs not only engage the inmates but also equip them with valuable skills that could help them reintegrate into society as productive citizens.

Additional District Commissioner Jayanta Bora, who recently visited the facility, emphasized the rehabilitative potential of these initiatives, stating, “Agriculture allows prisoners to step out of their routines, earn an income, and be inspired to lead honest lives.”

The highlight of the facility is its berry farm, featuring around 200 trees of rare varieties like Apple Berry, Miss India, and Thailand Berry. Jail authorities claim it is the first initiative of its kind in any Indian prison. In addition, the jail cultivates a variety of vegetables, including mustard, okra, ginger, brinjal, cabbage, and cauliflower, along with a small fishery providing fresh fish.

To further enhance the environment, authorities have planted strawberries and introduced 1,000 rose shrubs, uplifting the spirits of both inmates and staff. “Being with nature feels like stepping into another world,” remarked the jail authorities, underscoring the therapeutic impact of their green initiatives.

The efforts have not gone unnoticed. Jailor Nilutpal Kakati and Warder Hiteshwar Hazarika were recently honored by the Government of Assam for their outstanding contributions. The Barpeta Jail’s transformation stands as a model of innovation and rehabilitation, blending agriculture with reformative practices to create a brighter future for its inmates.
