Assam: Dhubri Police Crack Down on Illegal Gambling, Teer Agent Arrested

Guwahati: In a decisive move against illegal gambling, Dhubri police arrested a teer agent near Dhubri Girls College on Tuesday afternoon.

The accused, Samarjit Saha, a resident of Ward No. 6, Chatiantola, was apprehended at a pan shop where he was allegedly conducting his gambling operations.

Based on a tip-off, authorities recovered five teer ticket books, a Realme mobile phone suspected to facilitate client communication, and Rs 2,635 in cash believed to be proceeds from the illicit activity.

Legal proceedings have been initiated under relevant sections as part of the ongoing effort to clamp down on unlawful gambling practices in the region.

“Unlawful gambling negatively impacts society, and we are committed to eradicating it,” said Sub-inspector Jyotirmoy Das of Dhubri Sadar Police Station, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to maintaining law and order.

Teer, a betting game tied to archery contest results, remains a persistent challenge for law enforcement in Assam. Its popularity for promising quick financial returns often leads to severe financial and societal repercussions for participants.

Authorities are urging citizens to report such illegal activities to strengthen efforts to curb the practice and protect the community from its adverse effects.
