Mizoram: One arrested with Foreign-origin cigarettes in Lawngtlai

Aizawl: In a coordinated operation, the Assam Rifles, in collaboration with Mizoram’s Hnahthial Police, seized 260 cases of foreign-origin cigarettes valued at Rs 3.38 crore in Lawngtlai district on January 20.

The contraband, recovered from the General Area Tuichang Bridge, led to the arrest of a resident from Champhai. The seized items were handed over to the Hnahthial Police for further legal proceedings.

This action is part of a broader effort to curb smuggling activities in the region. Smuggling remains a critical issue, with Assam Rifles intensifying its operations to dismantle illegal trade networks.

The Assam Rifles, often referred to as the “Sentinels of the Northeast,” are at the forefront of these efforts.

In another significant operation, Assam Rifles intercepted a shipment of 60,000 Yaba tablets, worth Rs 12 crore in the international market, in Salbagan, West Tripura. The two individuals involved, Kanai Das (36) and Kishan Kumar Sarkar (32), were arrested and handed over to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence for further investigation.

Additionally, on January 18, a joint operation by Assam Rifles and the Excise and Narcotics Department in Siaha town, Mizoram, resulted in the seizure of 7.16 grams of Heroin No. 4 worth Rs 5.01 lakh. Two suspects were apprehended during the operation. These successive operations highlight the ongoing crackdown on narcotics and contraband trafficking in the region.
