Assam Police Unearth Cache of Explosives in Sonitpur Amid Tight Republic Day Security

Guwahati: In a significant security operation ahead of the 76th Republic Day, Assam Police recovered a cache of explosives buried in the jungle near Khwbra village in Sonitpur district on January 25.

The operation was carried out despite heightened security across the state for the celebrations.

Acting on reliable intelligence, the Sonitpur Police conducted a search operation in the Batashipur area under Dhekiajuli Police Station.

The search led to the discovery of 36 grenades and three detonators, wrapped in a polythene bag and buried underground. “One of the grenades had a damaged pin/lever and has been kept in a secured area under guard,” the police stated in a post on X. The bomb disposal squad of the Army has been contacted for the safe disposal of the explosives.

In preparation for Republic Day, security measures have been intensified across Assam to ensure a peaceful celebration.

Vehicle searches and patrolling are underway, while the Government Railway Police have increased inspections of trains, tracks, bridges, and passenger belongings in collaboration with the Railway Police Force. A close watch is also being maintained on waterways, including in Guwahati.

Special security arrangements have been made at Republic Day celebration venues.

Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya will unfurl the national flag in Guwahati, while Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will lead the celebrations in Dibrugarh. Ministers and other dignitaries are set to attend ceremonies at various locations across the state.

The state police’s vigilance comes in the wake of last year’s Independence Day embarrassment, when the ULFA(I) claimed responsibility for planting bombs in 24 locations across Assam.

Police later recovered “bomb-like substances” from 10 locations, including Guwahati.

Adding to the tension, the ULFA(I) and NSCN/GPRN have called for a “total strike” from midnight to 6 PM on Republic Day, urging residents of Assam, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh to avoid participating in the celebrations. Despite the threats, authorities are ensuring robust security to safeguard the festivities.
