Sikkim Folk Artist Naren Gurung Honored with Padma Shri for Contributions to Art

Gangtok: Sikkim’s celebrated folk artist, Naren Gurung, has been awarded the prestigious Padma Shri for his remarkable contributions to the field of art.

The announcement was made on Saturday, recognizing the 70-year-old’s lifelong dedication to preserving and promoting Sikkimese Nepali folk music and dance.

Known locally as the “Nepali Geet ke Guru Gurung,” Gurung has spent over six decades passionately working to safeguard the cultural heritage of Sikkim.

His pioneering efforts have also extended to reviving the traditional art forms of the indigenous Bhutia and Lepcha tribes, showcasing their rich heritage at both national and international platforms.

A native of Soreng district, Gurung’s influence extends beyond performances. A regular figure on radio and television, he has composed 30 songs and mentored a new generation of artists.

Through his numerous audio cassette releases, he has played a crucial role in popularizing folk traditions across Sikkim and neighboring regions.

In addition to his achievements in music, Gurung is an accomplished bhajan singer, further showcasing his versatility and deep cultural commitment.

He has represented Sikkim at major events like the Sanjari Concert and performed in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Kenya, earning international acclaim for his artistry.

The Padma Shri recognizes not only Gurung’s artistic talents but also his unwavering dedication to preserving the cultural identity of Sikkim. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of the region.
