Illicit Poppy Cultivation Destroyed in Manipur, Mob Attacks Security Personnel

Imphal: Illicit poppy cultivation spanning 45 acres of land was destroyed in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced.

The operation was conducted on Friday in the Lhungjang village hill range within the Saikul police station’s jurisdiction by a joint force of district police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), with an executive magistrate present.

Following the operation, FIRs were registered for further legal proceedings.

However, the operation was met with resistance. A mob of approximately 80 individuals confronted the security team, resulting in damage to four vehicles.

The incident unfolded in the Lhungjang hill range while the CRPF and police personnel were carrying out the poppy destruction.

“Around four light vehicles suffered damage, primarily to their front windshields,” police stated. The situation was brought under control through the use of minimal force, and subsequent reinforcements arrived to allow the poppy destruction operation in the Lhungjang hill range to resume.
