Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday expressed his elation over the announcement of a new urea plant in the state as part of the Union Budget for 2025-26.
Terming it a “game changer” for the entire Northeast, Sarma stated that the establishment of the 12.7 lakh MT urea plant in Namrup was a long-standing demand of the people of Assam.
In his post on X, Sarma highlighted that the plant would not only ensure self-sufficiency in fertiliser production but also optimize the use of natural gas resources in the region.
He also referred to the semiconductor plant in Jagiroad, stating that the urea facility would complement it in transforming the economic landscape of the region.
Sarma expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for the announcement, acknowledging their role in fulfilling this crucial demand of the state.
In her budget speech, Sitharaman confirmed the establishment of a new 12.7 lakh MT urea plant in Namrup to augment urea supply and ensure self-sufficiency.
The urea plant will be set up by Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Ltd (BVFCL), which has been a vital part of the fertilizer production landscape in Eastern India since 1969.
The BVFCL facility, under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, uses natural gas as its primary raw material for producing nitrogenous fertilizers.
