Meghalaya among top cement-producing states in India
Guwahati: According to the Economic Survey 2024-25, Meghalaya has been ranked among the top cement-producing states in India.
The state’s abundance of limestone deposits has made it an ideal location for cement plants.
India is currently the second-largest cement producer in the world, with an annual installed capacity of 639 million tonnes and a production of around 427 million tonnes in FY24.
The cement industry is largely concentrated in 14 states, including Meghalaya, which accounts for around 87% of the country’s total cement production.
The survey added that the industry has sufficient capacity to meet domestic cement demand, which is expected to increase significantly in the coming years.
The central government’s focus on infrastructure development, rural growth, and industrial expansion is likely to drive cement demand, with domestic consumption currently standing at around 290kg per capita, compared to a global average of 540kg per capita.
