Elvis Ali Hazarika, recently awarded the “Asom Saurav”—Assam’s second-highest civilian honour—praised the efforts of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in revolutionizing the sports sector. “Assam has produced several outstanding sportspersons in recent years, and I believe many more will rise in the coming days,” he said. Hazarika also lauded the government’s initiative of awarding jobs to successful athletes, ensuring a stable livelihood for sportspersons. “If the government continues supporting athletes, Assam will become the top sporting state in India,” he asserted.

Boxer Pranjit Dutta echoed similar sentiments, noting that the sports culture in Assam is evolving positively, with increasing parental involvement in shaping young athletes. “There is immense potential for children to build their future in sports,” he remarked.

Barpeta District Commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha informed that 1,048 athletes, selected through trials at the Legislative Assembly Council level, are participating in the district-level competitions. “We hope Barpeta’s athletes will bring laurels to the district,” he said.

The competitions in Barpeta will conclude on February 5, providing a crucial platform for athletes to showcase their skills. Khel Maharan continues to serve as a stepping stone for Assam’s emerging sports talent, offering them opportunities to compete on the national stage.
