Meghalaya Matches Best-Ever National Games Performance with Five Medals

Shillong: Meghalaya has equaled its best-ever performance at the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand, securing five medals, with 15-year-old Indra Sharma emerging as a surprise silver medalist.

Sharma, hailing from Ri-Bhoi district, clinched silver in the Men’s Slalom C1 Event, competing against seasoned athletes. The state’s campaign peaked when Vikash Rana, 23, won Meghalaya’s first gold medal of the games in the Men’s Kayak Cross Extreme Slalom event.

Adding to the tally, Elizabeth Vincent, a canoeing star with two Asian Championship bronze medals, secured silver in the Women’s Kayak Cross Extreme Slalom. Meanwhile, the rowing duo of Kiran Devi and B. Anandhi from Assam Rifles claimed bronze in the Lightweight Women’s Double Sculls.

The Meghalaya Canoe Association emerged as the state’s strongest performer, with all four of its qualified athletes winning medals. This achievement matches Meghalaya’s best medal haul from the 2007 National Games in Assam.

Recognizing the athletes’ efforts, the state government has announced cash awards, scholarships, and potential government job opportunities under the Sports Policy guidelines.
