Meghalaya: MUDA Shopping Complex Reopens in Shillong, Marking Recovery from 2022 Fire
Shillong: Vendors and shopkeepers have begun returning to the MUDA Shopping Complex in Meghalaya’s Ïew Laitumkhrah, signaling a major step in the marketplace’s revival following the devastating fire that destroyed it in 2022.
The reopening marks a crucial moment for the local economy, restoring a key commercial hub in Shillong.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma visited the complex on February 6, acknowledging the resilience of the affected business community. “Seeing the joy and hope in the eyes of vendors and shopkeepers as they prepare to restart their businesses is truly heartwarming,” he remarked. The fire had caused extensive damage, displacing numerous small traders and disrupting livelihoods.
The reconstruction of the shopping complex has been a collaborative effort, with the state government and local authorities working to restore the facility. Sangma commended the perseverance of the vendors, stating, “Their resilience and determination inspire us all.” He also expressed gratitude to those involved in rebuilding the marketplace.
With businesses gradually resuming operations, the MUDA Shopping Complex is set to regain its place as a vibrant commercial center. The revival is expected to boost local trade, providing economic stability for vendors and enhancing Shillong’s retail sector.
