Assam: Former BTC Deputy Chief Kampa Borgoyary Joins UPPL, Boosting Party’s Strength in BTR

Chirang, February 8, 2025 – In a significant political realignment in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), former BTC Deputy Chief and ex-BPF Vice President Kampa Borgoyary has formally joined the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL).

Borgoyary’s induction took place at a grand event at Thaikhajhora playground in Chirang district, where he was welcomed by UPPL President and BTR Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pramod Boro. The ceremony witnessed a massive turnout, with over 400 supporters accompanying Borgoyary in his transition to UPPL.

Pramod Boro extended a warm welcome to Borgoyary by presenting him with the traditional Aronai and a bouquet, marking his official entry into the party. The event’s overwhelming response signals a growing wave of support for UPPL in the region.

The political shift comes at a crucial time, as Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently announced that elections for the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) will be conducted before September 30, ensuring they are completed ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Speaking to the media, Sarma stated that the elections are expected to take place before Durga Puja, providing ample time for the new council to take charge.

Regarding the BJP-UPPL alliance, Sarma clarified that the final decision would be based on discussions between UPPL leader Pramod Boro and Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia. He emphasized that the decision would be strategic, aimed at securing the maximum number of seats for both parties.

“If contesting together ensures more seats, both parties will proceed jointly. However, if contesting separately yields better results, they will go their separate ways,” Sarma remarked, indicating a pragmatic approach toward the upcoming elections.

Borgoyary’s exit from the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and his switch to UPPL is widely seen as a major setback for the BPF, which has been struggling to maintain its influence in BTR. His move not only strengthens UPPL’s position but also further consolidates its growing political dominance in the region.

With this high-profile defection, the political landscape of BTR is set for an intense electoral battle, as parties gear up for the crucial BTC elections later this year.
