Manipur: Security Tightened in Imphal Following CM Biren Singh’s Resignation
Imphal: In the aftermath of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s resignation on February 9, Imphal, the capital of Manipur, has witnessed a significant increase in security measures to prevent any potential unrest. Singh’s resignation comes amid ongoing ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which have led to over 250 fatalities and displaced thousands since May 2023.
Authorities have responded swiftly by deploying a large number of police and security personnel across the city, ensuring law and order remains intact. Despite the heightened security, Imphal remains calm, with no immediate reports of violence or protests following the political development.
The resignation has triggered mixed responses from political leaders. Congress MP Kiran Kumar Chamala reacted by stating that Singh’s departure was inevitable, given the pressure from the opposition.
“After so many months, the resignation has finally come into existence. They realized that the Congress was planning a privilege motion against the government in the Manipur assembly, so he resigned on his own. But the issue does not end here. The Congress party demands justice for the people of Manipur,” Chamala stated.
Meanwhile, BJP MP from Darrang-Udalguri, Assam, Dilip Saikia, acknowledged Singh’s resignation but emphasized that it was a personal decision.
“We have received the information about the resignation. However, discussions regarding the next steps will be held within the party and cabinet before a final decision is made,” said Saikia.
Singh, a key BJP leader in the Northeast, submitted his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla just a day before the scheduled legislative assembly session, where the Congress was expected to introduce a no-confidence motion against him.
As Manipur navigates this leadership transition, the central government is yet to announce a successor. Discussions within the BJP leadership are currently underway to determine the next Chief Minister, with an official announcement expected later today.
In the meantime, security forces remain on high alert, ensuring that the political transition does not trigger fresh violence in the conflict-hit state.
