Akhil Gogoi Calls for Opposition Unity Ahead of 2026 Assam Elections

Guwahati: Raijor Dal president and Sibasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has issued a strong call for opposition unity, urging all anti-BJP forces to join hands ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

Speaking at a press conference in Sivasagar, Gogoi highlighted the importance of a united front, drawing lessons from the Delhi and Haryana elections, where opposition strength played a key role in challenging the ruling BJP. However, he expressed concern that many opposition parties in Assam have yet to recognize the necessity of collective action.

Criticizing the fragmented approach of the opposition, Gogoi emphasized that merely issuing statements against the BJP without a coordinated effort would not be enough to defeat what he termed a “formidable force”. He stressed that strengthening individual party organizations alone would not suffice and that a cohesive, united strategy was the only way to protect democracy in Assam.

Addressing the Congress party’s lack of unity, Gogoi urged them to set aside differences and work towards a common goal. He also called for an urgent meeting of all opposition parties to deliberate and finalize a joint strategy for the upcoming elections.

Expressing confidence in the Raijor Dal’s prospects, Gogoi stated that the party, whether contesting independently or within an alliance, would secure a larger share of seats in 2026. He reiterated that opposition unity is the key to countering the BJP’s “fascist and communal” politics, making it clear that the coming months would be crucial for Assam’s political landscape.
