Indian Army’s Spear Corps Hosts Mega Ex-Servicemen Rally in Nagaland
Dimapur – In a heartfelt tribute to the nation’s veterans, the Spear Corps of the Indian Army organized a grand ex-servicemen rally at Bhagat Stadium, Rangapahar Military Station, Dimapur, on February 12.
The event, held for ex-servicemen of the armed forces and the Assam Rifles from Nagaland and Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, witnessed an overwhelming participation of over 1,300 veterans, Veer Naris, widows, war heroes, and their families.
Among the distinguished attendees were 16 Veer Naris (war widows), four Veer Matas (mothers of fallen soldiers), and 33 war veterans, including those who served in the 1962 Indo-China War, the 1971 Indo-Pak War, and the 1999 Kargil War. These veterans actively engaged with officials, sharing their experiences and concerns.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio graced the occasion as the chief guest, accompanied by Lt Gen Abhijit S Pendharkar, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Spear Corps. Rio was felicitated by the Spear Corps Commander and other dignitaries from the civil administration, Army, and Assam Rifles. He praised the dedication and sacrifices of the veterans, stating, “The unwavering service of our veterans has laid the foundation for the strength and security of our nation. This afternoon is a small way of expressing our gratitude for their invaluable contributions.” As a token of respect, the chief minister donated ₹5 lakh to the Spear Corps Welfare Fund.
The event served as a platform for the ex-servicemen community to reconnect with their military roots while addressing welfare concerns. Comprehensive medical facilities were set up, with Army, Assam Rifles, and district hospital doctors providing consultations in ENT, orthopedics, ophthalmology, and dentistry. Special medical devices, including wheelchairs, walking sticks, and hearing aids, were distributed to those in need.
Senior representatives from the Naga and Assam Regiment record offices, along with officials from 20 other record offices, were present to assist veterans with pension-related issues. The Army Recruitment Office in Dimapur provided updates on upcoming recruitment opportunities and policy changes. Additionally, legal advisors from the State Legal Department, as well as representatives from banks and insurance firms, offered financial planning guidance.
The rally also featured a vibrant cultural program, adding a celebratory touch to the gathering. Gallantry Award winners, specially-abled veterans, and Veer Naris were felicitated by the chief minister and Spear Corps Commander as a mark of appreciation for their unwavering service to the nation.
Dedicated information kiosks and grievance redressal counters set up by various agencies—including the Principal Controller of Defence Accounts (Pension), SPARSH, Rajya Sainik Board, Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), and civil hospital—provided veterans with insights into government welfare programs. Commercial facilities, including canteen services, vehicle sales, and Sajni (a welfare initiative), catered to the needs of attendees from remote areas.
Expressing their gratitude, several veterans lauded the initiative, stating that such events reaffirm the Army’s continued support and respect for its ex-servicemen. “It is heartwarming to see the enduring bond between serving personnel and the veterans’ community. This event not only strengthens our connection but also ensures that our concerns are addressed with sincerity,” shared a war veteran.
