Assam: Elderly Woman Fatally Attacked by Wild Elephant in Gossaigaon, Husband Injured
Guwahati: A tragic incident unfolded in Bongaon village under the Raimona Western Forest Range in Gossaigaon, where a wild elephant fatally attacked an elderly woman and left her husband critically injured.
The attack occurred around 3:30 AM when the elephant strayed out of Raimona National Park and entered the village.
The deceased has been identified as 65-year-old Chatyavati Basumatary, who was unable to escape when the elephant stormed their home. Her husband, Chatrosingh Basumatary, sustained severe injuries while attempting to chase the animal away. He has been rushed to a hospital for urgent medical care.
The attack has left the villagers in deep shock, mourning the sudden loss while fearing further incursions. Adding to the devastation, a cow belonging to a villager named Samiel Tudu was also killed by the elephant, further highlighting the growing crisis of human-wildlife conflict in the region.
Incidents of wild elephants venturing into human settlements have been on the rise, often resulting in casualties and property damage. Local forest officials have been alerted, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further attacks. Meanwhile, residents continue to grapple with the increasing threats posed by wildlife, calling for urgent intervention to mitigate such conflicts.
