STF Assam Nabs Key Extremist Operative in Chennai Under Operation PRAGHAT
Guwahati: In a significant breakthrough against extremist networks, the Special Task Force (STF) Assam, in a joint operation with Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu Police, arrested a key extremist operative in Chennai under Operation PRAGHAT.
The meticulously planned operation, based on intelligence inputs and advanced surveillance, led to the capture of Abu Salam Ali, a resident of Khudigaon Part-II, Dhubri, Assam, in the early hours of February 12. His arrest, executed within the jurisdiction of Semmencherry Police Station, Chennai, marks a decisive move in Assam’s efforts to combat terrorism.
Ali has been identified as an active member of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) and Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen, two organizations linked to global fundamentalist networks. His role in facilitating extremist activities had been under investigation for months, with multiple operatives from Kokrajhar and Dhubri already taken into custody in earlier operations. Authorities revealed that Ali had been on the run since December 17, 2024, evading capture through a network of sympathizers until law enforcement agencies successfully tracked him down.
Investigators believe that Ali played a crucial role in coordinating extremist operations, working closely with Nur Islam Mandal and Shahinur Islam to expand radical activities. His actions, officials stated, were aimed at destabilizing national security through clandestine networks and recruitment drives. The arrest is expected to provide critical insights into the workings of these organizations and their larger agenda.
Ali has been booked under STF PS Case No. 21/2024, facing a slew of charges under multiple stringent laws, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Passport Act, Explosives Act, Arms Act, and Foreigners Act. Law enforcement agencies are continuing their investigation, with efforts underway to trace and dismantle other operatives connected to him.
The high-risk operation was spearheaded by Deputy SP STF Satyendra Singh Hazari, APS, under the strategic guidance of IGP, STF Parthasarathi Mahanta. Their swift and coordinated action underscores Assam’s unwavering commitment to eliminating terrorist threats and ensuring national security.
