Centre Announces ₹10,000 Crore Urea Plant in Assam’s Namrup

New Delhi – The Central Government has unveiled plans to set up a state-of-the-art urea plant in Namrup, Assam, at an estimated cost of ₹10,000 crore.

The project, expected to be completed within three and a half years, will create approximately 1,950 direct and indirect jobs, Rajat Kumar Mishra, Secretary of the Department of Fertilizers, announced on February 13.

The decision follows Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s announcement in the Union Budget 2025-26, which prioritized the construction of the new Namrup urea plant to boost domestic fertilizer production.

Describing it as the most awaited project in the North East, Mishra stated that the plant will have a production capacity of 12.70 lakh tonnes, catering to the fertilizer demand in the Northeast and Eastern India. Additionally, if necessary, the surplus production could be exported to neighboring countries.

The Namrup facility will contribute significantly to India’s self-sufficiency in urea production, raising the country’s total capacity to 335 lakh tonnes, covering 75-80% of domestic consumption and reducing reliance on imports.

The project will utilize both domestic and imported natural gas, ensuring efficient and sustainable urea production. Plans are also in place to manufacture nano fertilizers and other advanced products, Mishra added.

While emphasizing the importance of the balanced use of fertilizers, the Secretary highlighted the government’s focus on enhancing agricultural productivity while minimizing environmental impact.
