Guwahati: The upcoming budget session of the Assam Assembly, set to commence on February 17, is expected to be a crucial one, according to Deputy Speaker Numal Momin.
Speaking on Friday, Momin emphasized that the session would not only address key legislative matters but also serve as a platform to reinforce communal harmony in the state.
Highlighting Assam’s diverse cultural landscape, he expressed hope that the budget would unify all communities. He also hinted at the introduction of several significant bills during the session, though he did not disclose specific details.
In a major digital initiative, the Assam government has launched the Online Building Permission System (OBPS) across 32 municipalities.
The new system, introduced by Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah in Guwahati on February 13, is designed to streamline the approval process for building permissions.
Mallabaruah stated that the initiative aims to offer a smoother and more efficient service to residents, reinforcing the government’s commitment to citizen-centric governance.
Meanwhile, a political controversy has erupted in Assam, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma alleging links between Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s wife and Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI.
Sarma, in a social media post, claimed that Gogoi’s growing interest in defence matters stemmed from his marriage to a British citizen.
He also referenced a 2015 meeting between a first-term MP and then-Pakistani High Commissioner Abdul Basit, where discussions on India-Pakistan relations reportedly took place.
The allegations have triggered strong reactions, with Assam Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah demanding clarity from Gogoi on the matter. As the political climate intensifies ahead of the budget session, the state assembly is poised to witness heated debates over governance and security concerns.
