Government Prioritizes NH-10 Upgradation to Boost Sikkim Connectivity

Gangtok: The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways is undertaking multiple efforts to upgrade NH-10, a crucial artery connecting Sikkim with Siliguri, to facilitate smoother traffic movement.

Union Road Transport & Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, in a written reply to a Lok Sabha question by Sikkim MP Indra Hang Subba on February 13, stated that the government has initiated various projects to improve the road’s condition.

These projects include 4/6 laning work from Balason Bridge to Sevoke Army Cantonment, preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for 4-laning of the Sevoke Army Cantonment to Coronation Bridge stretch and widening to 2-lanes with paved shoulders from Sevoke to Rangpo and Rangpo to Ranipool.

Additionally, a Performance Based Maintenance Contract is in place for the Ranipool to Gangtok section. NHIDCL, a Central undertaking, is responsible for the overall maintenance and upgradation of NH-10 from Sevoke to Gangtok.

Expressing gratitude to the government, MP Subba acknowledged the positive impact these improvements will have on Sikkim’s development, particularly in tourism and infrastructure.

He attributed this focus on Sikkim’s connectivity needs to the strong relationship established between Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay and the Central leadership.
