Gaurav Gogoi Hits Back at Himanta Biswa Sarma, Accuses CM of Election Fears

Guwahati – In a fierce rebuttal to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s recent allegations against his wife, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi launched a sharp counterattack, accusing the CM of being “scared” ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections and predicting his eventual defeat.

Speaking to the media, Gogoi dismissed the claims made by Sarma, stating, “People of Assam saw the Chief Minister’s face yesterday. Look at his eyes—it was clear that something was amiss. There is something that is bothering the CM, and it is natural because he is scared. He changes his stand every day out of fear.”

Gogoi further suggested that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was feeling the pressure of the approaching elections, with the Congress leader asserting that Sarma’s shifting stances were reflective of his anxiety about the results.

“Congress’ stand is clear. If they have to investigate anything, they can. We stand firm. The fear among them is due to the elections that will be held 12 months from now. Their defeat is imminent, and he knows this. He knows that he will lose his post. So, he is scared for his own future when the Congress government will be formed in Assam,” Gogoi said confidently.

The Congress MP also took a swipe at Sarma’s tenure, accusing the Chief Minister of evading accountability for the past decade. “For 10 years, the people of Assam questioned the state government, but they did not get even one reply. In the last four and a half years, the people of Assam have been questioning Himanta Biswa Sarma, but he did not answer even one question. But he will have to answer after the 2026 elections. He has doubts in his mind today,” Gogoi remarked.

With the 2026 elections drawing closer, Gogoi outlined Congress’ strategy for the upcoming political battle. “In these 12 months, Congress will go to the people with a united front and raise their issues. At the end, the people of Assam will win,” he said, highlighting the party’s intent to engage with the public and present a clear alternative.

On the legal front, Gogoi revealed that Congress had already begun consultations regarding the allegations raised by Sarma. “We have already had a discussion with the legal team of AICC yesterday. We will be taking the next steps forward, but the preliminary discussions have already taken place,” Gogoi confirmed.

The exchange between Gogoi and Sarma has escalated the political tension between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress in Assam, with both sides gearing up for what is expected to be a highly contested election in 2026. The war of words signals a fierce battle ahead, with both parties preparing to face off as the polls approach.
