Melanistic Leopard Captured in Assam’s Tinsukia, Villagers Fear More in the Area
Assam: A melanistic leopard, commonly referred to as a black panther, was successfully captured by the forest department in Dimruguri Jogipathar village of Assam’s Tinsukia district.
The elusive predator had been causing panic among residents, prompting authorities to intervene and set up a trap cage on February 17.
The operation led to the successful capture of the big cat, bringing relief to the villagers who had been living in fear for months. The leopard had reportedly been spotted multiple times, triggering concerns over potential human-wildlife conflicts.
Despite this success, locals remain on edge, suspecting that more black panthers could be roaming the area. Many fear that additional sightings could lead to further disturbances and potential attacks on livestock or even humans.
Currently, forest officials are on-site, ensuring the safe relocation of the captured leopard to a more suitable habitat. Wildlife experts stress the importance of continued monitoring and conservation efforts, highlighting the delicate balance between protecting endangered species and ensuring human safety in forest-adjacent communities.
