Massive Opium Plantation Bust in Assam-West Bengal Border Region

Guwahati: A joint operation by the police, excise department, and agriculture department led to the destruction of over 10 bighas of illegal opium plantations near the Assam-West Bengal border.

The operation, conducted in the challenging char areas of the Sankosh River, a region known for illegal farming activities, saw a large police force, led by Gosaigaon sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Hiren Kumar Deka, navigate the difficult terrain to reach the cultivation site.

Authorities discovered a well-established network involved in the clandestine cultivation of opium. Upon reaching the site, the enforcement team promptly eradicated the illicit crops, employing tractors to plow and destroy the fields. Officials estimated the market value of one kilogram of opium at a staggering ₹64 lakh, underscoring the significant scale of the illegal operation.

Following this successful operation, authorities have intensified their efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the cultivation. Further legal proceedings are expected to follow in the coming days as investigations continue.
