Meghalaya: Sohra Administration Imposes 48-Hour Election Restrictions Ahead of KHADC Polls
Shillong: With the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) elections set for February 21, the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Sohra Civil Sub Division has enforced strict restrictions to maintain law and order. The order, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS), takes effect from 4:00 PM on February 19 and will remain in force until polling concludes.
ADM Mark Andrew Challam signed the directive, emphasizing the crucial 48-hour pre-election period, which authorities view as essential for ensuring a free and fair polling process. The restrictions are intended to prevent any activities that could disrupt public order or influence voters unduly.
Under the new mandate, public meetings, processions, and the use of loudspeakers related to the election are strictly prohibited. Exit polls and opinion polls—whether conducted via traditional media or social media—are also banned. Additionally, political workers who are not local voters must leave the area, with exceptions granted only to office bearers of political parties who are officially in charge of sub-division units during the election.
The order applies to the entire Sohra Civil Sub Division and specifically aims to curb illicit activities such as cash distribution, gift-giving, or liquor supply to voters. It aligns with Section 126(1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which mandates a complete halt to election campaigning during the final 48 hours before polling.
Exemptions have been made for election officials, security personnel, and essential service providers, ensuring the smooth conduct of the electoral process while maintaining law and order.
