Sikkim: Elderly Man Found Dead in Suspected Suicide in Namchi District

Gangtok: A 75-year-old man was found dead in an apparent suicide at his residence in Gupti, Turuk, under Namchi district, Sikkim, on Tuesday morning.

The deceased, identified as Ram Prasad Rai, son of the late Sakha Dhan Rai, was discovered hanging inside his home at approximately 8:30 AM.

The incident was reported to the authorities after Nar Bahadur Rai, a resident of Melli Bazar, filed a formal complaint with Melli Police Station around 11:00 AM.

Acting on the complaint, Melli PS registered an Unnatural Death (UD) case under Case No. 03/2025, invoking Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.

A police investigative team promptly reached the location, situated about 26 kilometers north of the police station.

Upon arrival, officers found the deceased hanging from a rod using a Khada (ceremonial scarf). As part of the procedural investigation, authorities documented the scene with photographic evidence and created a rough sketch of the area.

A magisterial inquest was subsequently conducted by BDO Sumbuk, Shri L.B. Pradhan, in compliance with official protocols under Notification No. 15/Home 2024, dated March 2, 2024. Witnesses were present during the process, and no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances were observed.

Following the completion of all necessary legal formalities, the body was transferred to District Hospital, Namchi, for a post-mortem examination.

While preliminary findings suggest suicide, authorities continue to investigate the case to determine any underlying factors leading to the tragic incident.
