Meghalaya: East Khasi Hills District Imposes 48-Hour Ban on Election Campaigning Ahead of Polling

Shillong: The East Khasi Hills District administration has implemented a 48-hour ban on election campaigning activities in adherence to the silence period mandated by Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

This order, issued by District Magistrate RM Kurbah on February 19, prohibits all forms of campaigning, including public gatherings, processions, and the use of loudspeakers, in the lead-up to polling day.

The restrictions also extend to any form of media campaigning, including television, print, and electronic media, as well as similar apparatus used to display election-related material. The purpose of the silence period is to provide voters with a quiet time for reflection, free from external influences, ahead of casting their votes.

The district administration has directed the Superintendent of Police to ensure compliance across all police stations in East Khasi Hills. Local media, including Doordarshan Kendra and All India Radio Shillong, have been instructed to broadcast the order to ensure widespread awareness.

All political parties, candidates, and returning officers in the district have been informed of the order, and the Information and Public Relations Department is responsible for disseminating the directive through local newspapers.

This step aligns with Meghalaya’s commitment to promoting “Greater Participation for a Stronger Democracy.”
