Mild Earthquake Hits Meghalaya’s North Garo Hills
Shillong: A light earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter scale struck Meghalaya’s North Garo Hills district on the morning of February 20. The tremors were recorded at 11:32 am IST and were also felt in parts of Assam, including Guwahati.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 25.87°N, 90.70°E, with a shallow depth of 5 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface. Shallow earthquakes typically cause more noticeable surface shaking compared to those occurring at deeper levels.
The northeastern region of India, being located in a seismically active zone, frequently experiences tremors. However, this earthquake falls within the low-intensity range, and no immediate reports of damage or injuries have emerged from the affected areas.
