Assam Health Minister Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthening Public Healthcare with Focus on Generic Medicines
Guwahati: Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal reiterated the state government’s commitment to improving public healthcare by ensuring the availability of essential medicines, with a strict emphasis on generic drugs. He clarified that branded medicines do not fall under the government’s procurement policy.
Speaking in the Assembly, Singhal shared that 265 out of the 275 listed essential medicines are now available across all government hospitals in Assam. The Directorate of Medical Education (DME) is responsible for overseeing the state’s essential drug list, which currently includes 125 medicines.
In addition, the AYUSH system provides 31 types of medicines, though the prescribed requirement stands at 33. Singhal emphasized that the government remains dedicated to enhancing drug availability and ensuring continuous medical supplies in healthcare facilities, reaffirming its focus on strengthening the state’s healthcare infrastructure.
