Chaos Erupts in Assam Assembly Over Attack on Congress MP Rakibul Hussain
Assam: The Assam Legislative Assembly witnessed chaotic disruptions on February 21 after opposition Congress MLAs protested against the attack on Congress MP Rakibul Hussain in Nagaon district.
Speaker Biswajit Daimary was forced to adjourn the House twice within the first 30 minutes, as Congress legislators created an uproar when their adjournment motion to discuss the issue was disallowed.
As soon as the House convened at 9:30 am, Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia demanded an adjournment motion, arguing that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s response in the Assembly lacked remorse or an apology for the attack.
The incident took place in Rupohihat, Nagaon, where Hussain, the Dhubri MP, and his personal security officers (PSOs) were attacked by unidentified individuals wielding cricket bats. The assailants, with their faces covered in black cloth, shouted slogans against the MP before launching the assault.
While Director General of Police (DGP) confirmed that Hussain was unharmed, his PSOs sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving medical care.
Speaker Daimary defended his decision, stating that the adjournment motion could not be allowed as the House was scheduled to discuss the finance bill.
In response, Minister Pijush Hazarika assured that the culprits had been identified, and legal action was underway. However, Congress legislators remained unsatisfied, storming into the Well of the House, leading to loud exchanges with BJP MLAs. The ruling party reminded the opposition that similar attacks on BJP leaders during Congress rule had gone unpunished.
As the ruckus escalated, the Speaker first adjourned the House for 10 minutes. However, as soon as proceedings resumed, Congress MLAs again stormed the Well, demanding a discussion. With tensions refusing to subside, Daimary adjourned the session for another five minutes before order was restored.
