Meghalaya: Shillong Lajong FC Held to Dramatic Draw, Title Race Intensifies in OC Blue Shillong Premier League 2024
Shillong: Shillong Lajong FC’s journey to the OC Blue Shillong Premier League 2024 title took a dramatic turn as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Nongrim Hills SC at the SSA Stadium, First Ground, Polo, on February 20. The result puts defending champions Mawlai SC in a stronger position in the title race, adding pressure on Lajong in the final stretch of the season.
Despite dominating possession, Lajong found themselves trailing for most of the second half after Bankyrshan Ryndong netted a well-placed goal in the 47th minute. The Nongrim Hills squad, featuring several lesser-used players, put up a resilient defensive display, frustrating Lajong’s relentless attacking efforts. Third-choice goalkeeper Kitboklang Marbaniang, stepping in for a rare start, delivered an outstanding performance between the posts.
Lajong struggled to break through the stubborn Nongrim Hills defense and had a goal disallowed for offside. A penalty appeal was also waved away, intensifying their frustration. However, deep into stoppage time, a defensive error by Shanborlang Thangkhiew saw Lajong awarded a crucial penalty. Iohborlang L Lyngkhoi stepped up in the 95th minute and calmly converted from the spot, salvaging a point for his side.
The draw means Lajong now sit on 33 points from 14 matches, two points behind Mawlai SC, who have a game in hand. Nongrim Hills, despite the spirited performance, remain in eighth place with 15 points, level with Sawmer SC but trailing on head-to-head results.
As the title race heats up, all eyes are now on the upcoming fixtures. The next matches are set for Saturday, with Ryntih FC facing Laitkor SC at 11 AM, followed by Sawmer SC taking on Mawlai SC at 3 PM. With the championship on the line, every game is now a must-win for Lajong as they look to reclaim the top spot.
