Tripura: Agartala’s Haora Riverfront Nears Completion, Transforming Cityscape with Rs 100 Crore Urban Makeover
Tripura: A sweeping urban transformation along the Haora River in Agartala is nearing completion, marking a significant milestone in the city’s development. The Rs 100 crore initiative, spanning 16.94 acres, has reshaped a 2-kilometre stretch of the riverbank into a modern, sustainable public space, integrating infrastructure enhancements with environmental conservation.
The project has introduced dedicated pathways for walking and cycling, along with key infrastructure additions such as bridges, a crematorium, and the redevelopment of Dashami Ghat. “We have ensured that modern infrastructure is seamlessly integrated with sustainability measures, using high-quality materials to enhance durability,” said Dr. Shailesh, Chief Executive Officer of Agartala Smart City Limited.
Beyond aesthetics, the initiative tackles Agartala’s long-standing challenges of flooding and waste management. Engineers have fortified the embankments with geotextile membrane and stone gapping technology to prevent erosion and flood damage. Additionally, extensive clean-up efforts are addressing the issue of garbage dumping into the river, transforming it into a vibrant, well-maintained public space.
The revamped riverfront will also include sports facilities, food stalls, a park, and a playground, creating a multi-use recreational zone. Improved lighting at Dashami Ghat is another key feature, enhancing accessibility and safety for visitors. Plans are also in place for a sewage treatment plant to maintain water quality in the long run.
Launched 18 months ago by Agartala Smart City Limited, this project stands as one of the city’s largest urban renewal efforts. With its completion on the horizon, the Haora Riverfront is set to become a model of sustainable urban development, offering residents and visitors a revitalized waterfront experience.
