Meghalaya Imposes Restrictions in East Jaintia Hills Following Vandalism

Shillong: The District Magistrate of Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills, Shivansh Awasthi, has issued an order imposing certain prohibitions in Wapungskur and Bataw villages with immediate effect. This decision aims to ensure public safety and maintain order in the region.

The order, passed under Section 163 of the BNSS, is a response to a serious act of vandalism that occurred in the said villages on February 21. The incident resulted in the destruction of an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM). To prevent further escalation of tensions, the authorities have prohibited certain activities in the affected areas.

The restrictions include:

  • Assembly Restrictions: The assembly of more than five persons is prohibited in and around Wapungskur and Bataw Village, except at the Polling Station.
  • Arms and Ammunition: The carrying of arms or lethal weapons is prohibited in and around Wapungskur and Bataw Village, except by security forces.
  • Obstruction of Movement: Any act by individuals or groups that obstructs the free movement of people is prohibited.
  • Disturbance of Public Order: Any act by individuals or groups that disturbs public order and general peace is prohibited.

The order, passed ex parte due to the urgency of the situation, will remain in force until further notice. Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with security forces deployed to ensure compliance and public safety.
