Sikkim Bids Farewell to Padma Shri Tula Ram Upreti with State Honours
The Sikkim government has announced that the last rites of Padma Shri Tula Ram Upreti will be conducted with full state honours, recognizing his immense contributions to agriculture and organic farming. Upreti passed away at the age of 100 at his residence in Assam Lingzey on February 22.
Expressing deep sorrow over his demise, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang hailed Upreti as a pioneering figure in sustainable agriculture. “I am deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Padma Shri Tula Ram Upreti Jyu at the remarkable age of 100. A visionary in agriculture and organic farming, he played a crucial role in shaping Sikkim’s journey toward sustainability and self-reliance. His invaluable contributions have left an indelible mark on our society, inspiring generations to uphold the rich traditions of natural and organic farming,” Tamang stated.
The Chief Minister also acknowledged Upreti’s role as the father of former Minister K.N. Upreti and praised his dedication, which earned him national recognition. “His unwavering commitment to traditional farming practices and his passion for sustainable agriculture brought immense pride to our state,” he added.
On behalf of the people of Sikkim, Tamang extended heartfelt condolences to Upreti’s family and prayed for the departed soul’s eternal peace.
Tula Ram Upreti was a pioneering force behind Sikkim’s organic farming movement, significantly contributing to the state’s recognition as India’s first fully organic state.
