Guwahati: A senior police officer lost his life in a devastating road accident in Guwahati’s Lalmati area after a speeding Swift car ran over his scooter.
The deceased has been identified as Birinchi Kumar Das, the Officer-in-Charge of Ghograpar Police Station in Nalbari, who was reportedly on a month-long leave at the time of the accident.
Eyewitnesses described the horrifying moment when the Swift car, bearing registration number AS 01AY 9101, lost control while speeding. The vehicle first crashed into a road divider before slamming into Das’s scooter with immense force. The impact left the scooter completely mangled, and Das succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Following the collision, the driver of the car fled, abandoning the wrecked vehicle at the accident site. Preliminary reports suggest that the tragic incident occurred while Das was attempting to cross the national highway. Authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the possibility of reckless driving.
The accident has sparked renewed concerns among local residents, who have long voiced their fears over the dangers of this particular stretch of road. Many claim that poor visibility and frequent incidents of speeding make the area a hotspot for accidents, particularly at night. The tragedy has once again highlighted the urgent need for stricter road safety measures and enforcement to prevent further loss of life.
