Sikkim: High-Level Review Meeting Focuses on Progress of Sevoke-Rangpo Railway Project
Gangtok: A significant review meeting was held today at the Tashiling Secretariat to evaluate the ongoing progress of the Sevoke-Rangpo Railway Project (SRRP).
Chaired by Chief Secretary R. Telang (IAS), the meeting was attended by senior officials from various state government departments and representatives from the North East Frontier Railway (NFR), including Shri Hitendra Goyal, CAO/NFR, and Shri Renya Eta, CGM (IRCON).
The discussions centered on key aspects of the project, including infrastructure development, project timelines, and the challenges encountered during execution. Officials provided an update on the 45-km railway line from Sevoke to Rangpo, which has achieved over 70% physical progress. The line, designed to accommodate both passenger and freight trains, is expected to be completed by December 2027, significantly improving regional connectivity.
One of the notable milestones in the project includes the completion of the Sevoke station yard, while a world-class railway station is planned for Rangpo. Additionally, the future phases of the project were discussed. Phase 2 will extend the railway line from Rangpo to Gangtok, which is anticipated to improve accessibility to the Sikkim capital. Phase 3, which proposes an extension to Nathula, was also highlighted as a strategically important development.
Chief Secretary R. Telang emphasized the project’s importance in enhancing regional connectivity and facilitating economic growth in the state. He stressed that the completion of the railway line will be a significant boost to the tourism industry. Telang urged all stakeholders to ensure smooth coordination and accelerate efforts to meet the project deadlines, as the timely execution of the SRRP is crucial for the region’s development.
