Meghalaya Committed to Resolving Border Disputes With Assam, Says CM Sangma

Shillong: The Meghalaya government remains committed to securing long-lasting peace with its neighbors, with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma reaffirming efforts to resolve the remaining areas of difference with Assam.

Speaking in the state assembly, Sangma emphasized that negotiations are ongoing to settle the unresolved border disputes, including Langpih in West Khasi Hills and Block I & II in Assam’s Karbi Anglong.

The two northeastern states have a longstanding border dispute spanning 12 areas along their 884.9-km inter-state boundary. However, progress has been made, with six areas of difference already resolved through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in March 2022 in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi. Sangma assured that the government remains committed to addressing the remaining issues through continued dialogue and cooperation.

Stressing the importance of sustained efforts, the CM noted that the Regional Coordination Committees from both states have been engaged in negotiations, which he described as unprecedented progress compared to previous years. He further assured that the state government will take necessary steps to develop adequate infrastructure in the areas where disputes have been resolved.

Recognizing the complexity of the issue, Sangma maintained that dialogue remains the key to a lasting solution. Additionally, he stated that the government is actively examining land registration matters, underscoring its commitment to ensuring a structured resolution to the border issue.
