Assam Police Seize Heroin Worth ₹5 Crore, Arrest Four in Sivasagar
Guwahati: In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, Assam Police arrested four drug peddlers and seized around 1 kg of heroin worth ₹5 crore in Sivasagar district.
The operation, carried out jointly by the Sivasagar and Golaghat district police, was led by Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) John Das.
The arrests were linked to an ongoing investigation under Sarupathar police station case number 18/24, U/S-21(c)/29 of the NDPS Act. Acting on intelligence inputs, an anti-drug operation was launched on March 4 at Halwating, where two Bolero vehicles, one without a number plate, were intercepted. A thorough search led to the discovery of 65 packets of heroin, weighing 992.13 grams, concealed in a hidden compartment inside the vehicle’s trunk.
The four arrested individuals have been identified as Pinku Debnath, Narayan Debnath, Baburam Konwor, and Rabi Jaiswal. Among them, Jaiswal was the prime accused in the Sarupathar police station case and had been absconding since July 2023. Authorities confirmed that the seized consignment was smuggled from a neighboring state and was intended for delivery in Tinsukia.
Reacting to the successful operation, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, “Drugs worth ₹5 crore recovered. In a joint anti-narcotics operation carried out by @Golaghat Police and @Sivasagarpol at Haluwating under Sivasagar district, the following items were recovered: 2 Bolero Vehicles, 992.13 grams of heroin, people apprehended.”
This latest bust follows another major drug seizure in Cachar district on January 20, where police intercepted narcotics worth ₹1 crore and arrested one person. Authorities in Assam continue to intensify their anti-drug operations, reaffirming their commitment to curbing illegal drug trade in the state.
