Manipur Shaken by Twin Earthquakes, Tremors Felt Across Northeast India
Imphal: A significant earthquake, registering a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale, jolted the Kamjong district of Manipur this morning, March 5th, at precisely 11:06 AM. The seismic event sent tremors rippling through the region, notably felt in Guwahati, Assam, and parts of Meghalaya.
The National Center for Seismology (NCS) pinpointed the earthquake’s epicenter at latitude 24.75 N and longitude 94.35 E, occurring at a depth of 110 kilometers. Sanjay Shaw, the Director of Meteorology, Guwahati, verified to the media that the tremors were indeed perceptible in and around the city.
Following the initial quake, a second tremor, measuring 4.1 in magnitude, struck the same Kamjong district at 12:20 PM, originating at a depth of 66 kilometers. These successive seismic events resulted in visible cracks appearing on several structures within Manipur, as evidenced by circulating social media footage.
Despite the structural damage, no immediate reports of casualties or widespread devastation have been received.
Prior to the Manipur earthquakes, Myanmar experienced two consecutive seismic events earlier in the day. A magnitude 4.7 earthquake occurred at 3:36 AM, followed by a 4.5 magnitude tremor at 3:54 AM. These earthquakes were recorded at depths of 32 kilometers and 10 kilometers, respectively.
