Guwahati Municipal Corporation Issues Final Call for Tax Payments, Threatens Stringent Measures
Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has issued a stern warning to property tax defaulters, demanding immediate clearance of outstanding dues before the end of March.
Mayor Mrigen Sarania, during a recent press conference, detailed the corporation’s efforts in tax collection and unveiled forthcoming municipal initiatives for the 2024-25 fiscal year. The GMC has successfully collected property tax from 1.10 lakh households out of a total of 1.16 lakh, achieving significant progress.
However, the corporation has only garnered between Rs 80-85 crore against a targeted Rs 130 crore. Shops across the city have contributed Rs 27 crore in tax revenue, yet approximately 25,000 traders remain without valid trade licenses.
Defaulters are being urged to utilize the remaining time in March to settle their dues and avoid facing penalties.
Looking ahead to the 2025-26 fiscal year, the GMC has announced a tiered discount system for early property tax payments. Those who pay by April will receive a 10% discount, while those paying later will only receive a 5% reduction. Conversely, defaulters who fail to meet their tax obligations will face a penalty increase of up to 20%.
The GMC has already collected ₹135 crore from various sources and is intensifying efforts to recover all pending taxes. In a move to enforce trade license compliance, the corporation has declared that legal action will commence in June against those operating without valid licenses. This action may include sealing shops and businesses, as the GMC aims to bolster tax compliance through more rigorous enforcement.
Mayor Mrigen Sarania underscored the pivotal role of timely tax payments in the city’s overall development. He appealed to citizens and businesses alike to cooperate with the GMC and fulfill their civic responsibilities. The corporation has vowed to escalate its enforcement measures to ensure that all outstanding taxes are collected and that trade licenses are obtained, thereby contributing to the financial health and progress of Guwahati.
