Tripura Pushes for Agartala Airport’s International Status, Seeks Revival of Kailashahar Airstrip
Agartala: The Tripura government is making efforts to upgrade Agartala airport to international status, with Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu assuring that he will approach the Union Home Ministry to facilitate the establishment of a customs check-post for immigration services.
This approval is a prerequisite for the airport’s designation as an international facility, a move that could boost connectivity and trade opportunities for the state.
Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, addressing a press conference, stated that during a recent meeting in New Delhi, he urged Naidu to expedite the process.
Additionally, the minister revealed that Naidu is likely to visit the abandoned Kailashahar airport in Unakoti district to assess its feasibility for revival. The state government has been pushing for necessary renovations to make the airstrip operational again, particularly for small aircraft. Naidu has assured that a final decision will be taken after the conclusion of the Lok Sabha budget session.
Beyond aviation, Chowdhury also met Union Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution Minister Pralhad Joshi to request the establishment of a regional office of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) in Agartala. The Union Minister has reportedly taken the matter under serious consideration. In a major financial boost for the state, the Centre has also agreed to clear pending reimbursement bills totaling Rs 53.17 crore.
Additionally, the Tripura government has sought railway infrastructure upgrades. Chowdhury met Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to request the introduction of Vande Bharat Express services to Agartala and the conversion of the single-track railway line between Dharmanagar and Sabroom into a double line. The Railway Minister has assured that these demands will be reviewed for implementation.
With multiple infrastructure and connectivity proposals under discussion, Tripura’s efforts align with its broader vision of enhancing transportation facilities and improving economic prospects for the state.
