Imphal, Manipur – Lok Sabha representative Angomcha Bimol Akoijam engaged in a crucial dialogue with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan on Thursday, focusing on the persistent unrest plaguing Manipur. The core of their discussion centered on strategies to reinstate peace and stability within the troubled region.
Akoijam underscored the severe economic repercussions of the ongoing crisis, advocating for immediate budgetary interventions to mitigate the financial strain. He articulated the urgent need for fiscal measures to alleviate the economic burdens faced by the state’s residents.
A significant point of emphasis for Akoijam was the revitalization of the Manipur Police. He stressed the necessity of restoring and bolstering the state police’s authority and operational capabilities. The MP clarified that the central armed forces, including the CRPF, the army, and paramilitary units, should function solely in a supporting role to the state police, rather than as primary law enforcement.
The parliamentarian further proposed a balanced disarmament initiative, applicable across both the hill and valley regions of Manipur. He expressed approval for the government’s recent decision to facilitate unrestricted movement along the state’s highways, seeing it as a positive step towards normalcy.
Akoijam urged Governor Bhalla to exercise the state’s full legal authority to address the prevailing challenges decisively. He advocated for a robust and legitimate approach in restoring order and ensuring public safety.
To enhance the governor’s understanding of local sentiments and concerns, Akoijam recommended the appointment of local advisors. He believed that such advisors would provide valuable insights and facilitate more effective governance.
Finally, Akoijam sought clarity on the government’s actions against the proliferation of illegal narcotics. He specifically inquired about measures taken to combat poppy cultivation, the production of synthetic drugs, and illicit drug trafficking within the state.
