Meghalaya Bamboo Mission Expands Cultivation Across 383 Hectares
Shillong: The Meghalaya Bamboo Mission has achieved notable progress in expanding bamboo cultivation, with 383 hectares of land brought under the initiative between 2018 and 2024.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma shared the update in the Assembly, highlighting the mission’s role in fostering bamboo-based industries, generating employment, and promoting environmental sustainability.
While the project has gained momentum, challenges persist, particularly in market access and scaling up production. The state government is actively exploring strategies to strengthen the bamboo sector and align it with Meghalaya’s broader economic development plans. Efforts are underway to enhance processing capabilities, improve supply chains, and integrate bamboo into various industries to maximize its economic potential.
With bamboo emerging as a key resource for sustainable development, the mission’s expansion is expected to contribute significantly to both rural livelihoods and the state’s green economy.
