Shillong: The tranquil waters of Umiam Lake in Shillong were transformed into a dynamic combat zone as the Indian Air Force (IAF) executed a comprehensive training exercise.
The display featured a powerful orchestration of multiple aircraft and helicopters, demonstrating the IAF’s readiness for complex operations. This exercise was not merely a show of force, but a strategic maneuver aimed at bolstering seamless collaboration between the IAF, the Indian Army Special Forces, and the Navy.
The training regimen was a spectacle of precision and agility, incorporating Combat Rubberised Raiding Craft drops, daring para jumps, and tactical helocasting—an operation that involves personnel leaping from aircraft directly into water. These operations were carried out using the robust An-32 and the versatile C-130 aircraft, alongside the reliable Mi-17 helicopters. The exercise was meticulously designed to refine the forces’ ability to operate in challenging environments and to ensure rapid and effective deployment in real-world scenarios.
Adding to the significance of the event, National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets from Shillong were given a front-row seat to witness the dynamic operations. Their presence underscored the IAF’s commitment to inspiring the next generation of defenders and providing them with firsthand exposure to the nation’s military prowess. The IAF, through its official channels on X, highlighted the exercise, stating, “IAF executed combat operations training at Umiam Lake, Shillong, featuring Combat Rubberised Raiding Craft drops, para jumps, and helocasting from An-32, C-130 aircraft, and Mi-17 helicopters. These missions enhance interoperability with Indian Army Special Forces and were witnessed and admired by NCC cadets in Shillong.”
In a parallel development, the Defence Ministry has signaled a significant upgrade to the IAF’s combat capabilities. A high-level committee, led by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, has endorsed the IAF’s requirement for new multirole fighter aircraft. This endorsement is a crucial component of the committee’s report, which focuses on the ‘Capability Enhancement of IAF’. The committee’s recommendations, now submitted to the Defence Minister, pave the way for a streamlined procurement process, with the IAF tasked with preparing the statement of case for acquiring the desired capabilities. The Defence Ministry will then facilitate the necessary approvals, ensuring a timely acquisition.
This decision comes amidst international interest in supplying the IAF with advanced fighter jets, with the US promoting its F-35 fifth-generation aircraft and Russia offering its Su-57. The committee has outlined key thrust areas for the IAF, providing recommendations for short, medium, and long-term implementation to achieve optimal capability enhancement. The focus on acquiring new multirole fighter aircraft underscores the nation’s commitment to maintaining a technologically advanced and strategically capable air force.
