Meghalaya’s NEIGRIHMS Completes Landmark Training on Virtual Autopsy, Pioneering Forensic Advancements

SHILLONG: The Department of Forensic Medicine at NEIGRIHMS, Shillong, has successfully concluded a four-week hands-on training program on Virtual Autopsy, marking a major leap forward in forensic investigations.

The program, held from February 10 to March 8, was the first of its kind in the region and saw participation from forensic faculty and residents across India.

Supported by the Department of Health Research, the training introduced Virtual Autopsy—a cutting-edge, CT scan-based technique that provides a non-invasive alternative to traditional post-mortem examinations. Using advanced imaging technology, forensic experts can now determine the cause and manner of death with greater accuracy, eliminating the need for dissection in many cases.

NEIGRIHMS is now only the second institution in India to adopt this advanced forensic tool. Prof. A.J. Patowary, Head of the Forensic Medicine Department, emphasized its significance in modernizing forensic science and enhancing medico-legal investigations.

At the closing ceremony, NEIGRIHMS Director Prof. (Dr.) Nalin Mehta congratulated participants on acquiring this revolutionary skill and urged them to initiate similar programs in their respective institutions.

Reaffirming its commitment to forensic advancements, NEIGRIHMS has announced plans for more such training programs in the future, ensuring that forensic specialists across India are equipped with expertise in Virtual Autopsy technology.
