Sikkim CM Lauds Police Backbone, Pledges Enhanced Support for Force Revitalization

Gangtok: At the Ridge Park flagging-off ceremony for new Fire Department water tenders, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang shifted focus to the state’s police force, emphasizing their pivotal role in maintaining law and order.

He declared the state police as the “backbone of Sikkim,” citing their responsibility in ensuring law and order, controlling administration, and maintaining peace. While acknowledging their national-level recognition, he urged for further strengthening of the system.

The Chief Minister underscored the significance of visible and active police presence in the field, asserting that it directly correlates with a lower crime rate. He praised newly appointed Director General of Police Akshay Sachdeva and his team, expressing confidence in their ability to elevate Sikkim Police to become the best in the country. He pledged the government’s unwavering support to ensure the force functions effectively.

Tamang highlighted the SKM government’s initiatives, including the Special Inquiry Fund and Traffic Management Fund, previously non-existent. He also emphasized the government’s commitment to timely promotions for police personnel, viewing it as essential for their motivation and commitment to state security. He urged the six Superintendents of Police to appoint Station House Officers in every police station for efficient policing.

With Sikkim’s 50th Statehood Day approaching, CM Tamang stressed the police’s critical role in maintaining discipline and security during the celebrations. He announced a new initiative to revive the sports culture within the police force, forming a state-level football team. Each player will receive Rs 5 lakh for diet and nutrition, and the team will compete in recognized state-level tournaments.

Tamang reiterated the government’s commitment to providing all necessary assistance to the police department, aiming to make Sikkim a peaceful and well-administered state. He affirmed that the government is ready to assist with any required support, and to work together to improve the state.
