Sikkim Police to Field State-Level Football Team, CM Announces Major Player Support

Gangtok: In a move aimed at bolstering both police morale and state sporting prowess, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has unveiled plans to establish a dedicated football team within the police department.

Addressing attendees at the flagging-off ceremony for new water tenders destined for the Fire Department at Ridge Park, the chief minister emphasized the crucial role of the Sikkim police in upholding law and order within the state.

Beyond their core responsibilities in maintaining peace and security, Chief Minister Tamang highlighted the police department’s longstanding engagement in various sporting activities, particularly football and volleyball. He articulated a vision to revitalize and formalize the police’s football presence, creating a team that will proudly represent Sikkim in officially recognized tournaments.

Recognizing the demanding physical requirements of competitive football, the chief minister announced a substantial financial commitment to player welfare. “For a good football team, proper diet is very important. To support our police players, we have decided to provide Rs 5 lakh per player for diet and other expenses,” he stated, underlining the government’s dedication to the team’s success.

To ensure the team’s professional development, a technical advisory group will be formed to provide guidance and expertise. Chief Minister Tamang clarified that the team’s focus will be on competing at the state level in recognized matches, rather than participating in local tournaments, emphasizing a commitment to elevating the standard of police sports representation.
