Illegal Encroachments Along NH-02 in Manipur Pose Flood Risk, Officials Warn

Imphal: Authorities in Manipur have raised alarms over illegal encroachments along National Highway-02, warning that unauthorized structures block crucial drainage systems and could lead to severe flooding during the upcoming monsoon season.

In a high-level inspection led by Senapati Deputy Magistrate Mamoni Doley, officials assessed the highway’s vulnerable stretches, particularly between Taphou Liangmai and Mao Gate. The team included ADM Senapati Rang David Kung, SDO Senapati, SDO Lairouching Panii James, SDO Tadubi Sheveine, and ADM Mao Ningreingam Leisan, alongside representatives from NHIDCL, IGGL, and the Revenue Department.

Following the inspection, the Deputy Magistrate issued strict enforcement orders, banning construction within 10 metres of the highway’s right-of-way, material storage along the route, hill cutting that could trigger landslides, and any activity obstructing drainage structures. Violators will be prosecuted under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, Section 188 of the IPC, and other applicable laws.

With the monsoon approaching, local authorities in Senapati district have been directed to tighten enforcement measures to prevent road damage, landslides, and waterlogging, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity and public safety along this vital transportation corridor.
