Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has condemned the violent attack on journalists at Jadavpur University, calling it an “atrocity” perpetrated by left-ideological elements. The Chief Minister, in a strong statement, alleged that the incident exposed a pattern of politically motivated violence, further accusing the left of using aggression as a tool for dominance.
The remarks follow a disturbing attack on three journalists—Hridita, Pinki, and Bhaskar—on March 13 while they were covering an event on the university premises. Reports suggest that the journalists were assaulted by individuals allegedly associated with leftist groups disguised as students and university staff. The attack, described as premeditated, has raised concerns about press freedom and security on campuses.
In a particularly shocking turn, journalist Pinki was not only physically assaulted but also forcibly detained inside the registrar’s office, where she was allegedly coerced into deleting crucial footage. Meanwhile, journalist Hridita was chased off campus during a live broadcast, facing verbal abuse and physical intimidation before bravely returning to confront her attackers. Reporter Bhaskar was also targeted, locked inside the registrar’s office, and subjected to violent harassment. Video evidence shows a mob pushing and shoving him while hurling derogatory slurs.
The incident has sparked outrage within media circles, with several journalist associations demanding swift action against those responsible. The assault has also reignited discussions on rising campus violence and the increasing suppression of journalists in politically charged environments. Calls for an impartial investigation and stricter security measures on university campuses have gained momentum in the wake of the attack.
